A Prevalence Survey of Pulmonary Tuberculosis on Koje Island

Abstract
The prevalence survey of tuberculosis carried out towards the inhabitants numbered 514 in total at the village Kuyung, Changmok-myon and 682 at Myengdong, Yeoncho, Koje Island July 17 through September 12, 1974 makes the followings:.
1. The infection rate.
a) A total of 1, 196 inhabitants were subjected to apply for tuberculin test, and the coverage was 87.8%.
b) 33.7% of the objects had B.C.G. scar.
c) The total infection rate was 58.3% on the average; 63.2% in male and 54.1% in female.
d) The infection rate shown by age groups was for 0-4, a gradual increase with ages, a sharp rise between 15-19 and maximum for 40.44.
e) The maximum rate by regional groups lied in the fishing village, Kuyung.
f) The rate of strong tuberculin reactions showed :an increase in proportion to the increase of positive tuberculin reactors.
g) The infection rate of the patients¢¥ folks sho-wed 79.2% in the positive reactors of sputum and 59.1% in the negative reactors of sputum, and of folks with no patients was 45.4%.
2. The prevalence rate.
a) The total elegible number for chest X-ray was 1, 103, all inhabitants over 5 years of age and the coverage was 88.8%.
b) The total prevalence rate was 4.6%: 6.19% for male and 3.04% for female.
c) The rate indicated an increase with ages, high rate for 10-19, and particularly high above 40.
d) The maximum was shownmat the fishing village, Kuyung.
e) The rate by conditions; 2.45% minimal case, 1.43% mod, advanced, 0.724 far-advanced and 0.82% cavities.
f) The patients who had anamnesis was 46.7%; 71.4% in far advanced, 78.6% in moderate advanced and 20.8% in minimal cases.
g) The factors involved in the prevalence were found and rated as below:
(1) 11.7% in the group of low standard of living, 4.3% in the group of medium standard of living and 2.0% in the group of high stand rd of living.
(2) 23.8% in bloody sputum, 17.2% in shortness of breath, 15.1% in chronic cough, 14.4% in malaise, 13.5% in cold sweat, 13.1% in weight loss, 13.5% in mild fever, 12.9% in poor appetite and 28.9% in coexistence of the 3 conditions among the above ones.
(3) The rate by body weight standard 30.9% standard (ideal body weight), 1.7% above standard and 30.9% below standard.
(4) The prevalence rate shown in the patients¢¥ folks was 25. 0% and the frequency which had two or more patients in the same family was 51.7% of the whole patients.
(5) The prevalence rate of positive tuberculin reactor proved; over 30mm 20%, 25~29mm 14.3%, 20~24 mm 8.9%, 15~19 mm 8.6%,10~44 mm 4.8 %, 5~9 mm 3.3% and 0~4mm 0%. h) Sputum AFB test.
(1) Of the whole X-rayed, 1.12% proved sputum AFB positive.
(2) The positive rate of sputum AFB study by conditions: minimal case 12.5%, mod advanced 35.7% and far advanced 42.9%.
